ReplyDeleteKyana, both you and Maddie have impressed me with the progress you have already made on this task. How cool would it be to find a way of connecting with teenagers who use sign language for kanohi ki te kanohi conversations. Have you found the Deaf Aotearoa site online for more information?
ReplyDeleteKyana and Maddie, I have been thinking about your project. Learning Sign Language is a skill that can be used to communicate. As in many relationship communications the 'words' are but part of the understanding. I have looked online for some book titles and spoken with Sue to see what books we can access for you to build a wider knowledge. There are not too many books out there! In our library we have "A Quiet Kind of Thunder" by Sara Barnard, and I have issued this for you.
ReplyDeleteWe have also ordered "Seeing Voices" from the National Library, Publication date: 1989. A journey into the world of deaf culture, and the neurological and social underpinnings of the remarkable visual language of the congenitally deaf.
Sue has also purchased a novel called "Five Flavors of Dumb" by Antony John.
